Everyone loves food – in some form or fashion. But everyone’s relationship with food is different, especially in a situation that is stressful. And let’s face it; not having a job – especially when it has been your purpose – is stressful.
Some people stress eat, while others stop eating completely. Neither option is a good option. When you are stressed, it’s important to maintain healthy eating habits.Don’t binge eat your comfort foods. Conversely, don’t forget to eat all together. This is especially important if you have started an exercise routine.
An easy way to maintain healthy eating habits is to have a schedule. Plan to eat breakfast each day at the same time, as well as lunch. Dinner should be easier as it’s a time to come together with your family and connect.
What you eat is just as important as making sure you don’t binge or don’t eat. According to the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, you should eat a mix of foods across all the food groups: vegetable, fruits, grains, dairy, and protein. For someone who maintains a 2,000 calorie per day, a healthy daily eating pattern includes:
- 2 cups of fruit, especially whole fruits
- 2-1/2 cups of a variety of vegetables
- 3 cups of fat-free or low-fat dairy
- 6 ounces of grains, at least half of which are whole grains
- 5-1/2 ounces of protein
- 5 teaspoons of oils such as canola or olive oil, or foods that are source of oils such as avocados or nuts
The number of calories a person needs to consume each day varies by many factors, including height, weight, sex, and age. The range lies somewhere between 1,600 and 3,000. Make sure you are eating the correct number of calories for you.
Eating healthy isn’t hard. And it doesn’t mean cutting out the foods you love. It means making sure you get the nutrients you need while still enjoying your comfort foods and favorite junk food. Not to mention, finding new and delicious ways to ensure you are getting the proper nutrition can be fun!
