An Idle Mind Is a Terrible Mind

life long learning

Having an idle mind can be a terrible experience, especially for someone who is used to using his or her brain all day every day. It can lead to a feeling of lethargy, boredom, stupidity, and even depression.

At first, not having to worry about anything can be freeing. It’s almost like going on a well deserved vacation. But after time, your idle mind can start to feel twitchy.

That’s normal. When you are used to going full-speed ahead at least 5 days a week, your mind begins to crave the excitement; the go-go-go; the challenge of finding solutions, solving a problem, or completing a complex task.

But just because you aren’t currently working doesn’t mean you can’t use your brain. There are lots of ways we use our brain. An idle mind does not need to be your new way of life.

Chances are, you are a Type A personality, or at least have some Type A traits. What, outside of a job, can you tackle? What interests do you have that you want to learn more about or stay up-to-date on? There are books written on every subject imaginable.

Or take a class. Whether at your local college or online, the opportunities are endless. Taking a class doesn’t mean you are abandoning the career you have had for years, just expanding your horizons. Or maybe there is something else you always wanted to do when you grow up.

Pick an interest and learn more. Now is the time to take advantage of the one thing you probably didn’t have when you were working.: time. And who knows? It might even lead you down a new path you never imagined!
