Every day, or at least some days, you go through the routine. You check your favorite job board and apply for jobs – regardless of whether it is an opportunity you are interested in or not. And then you go through the usual rigmarole of no response, no thank yous, weeding out projects, and initial interviews. You’re looking for that opportunity that is out there, but never seems to materialize. You know it’s out there. But where?
All kinds of annoying cliches exist regarding time and opportunity. “Good things come to those who wait.” “Patience is a virtue.” But there is also another annoying cliche that holds true for most of us: We want to have our cake and eat it too. As much as we hate them, these cliches really do apply to the opportunities out there.
People have expanded on the idea of “good things come to those who wait” over the years. It’s been expanded. Abraham Lincoln said, “Good things come to those who wait, but only the things left by those who hustle.” This is misleading. You are hustling; you are trying to find that opportunity. You know it exists, but just haven’t found it yet.
What we all forget, and what we all hate to hear, is that things happen for a reason. Along with that sentiment is the idea that opportunities arise when they are supposed to. That time may not be when you want it to be, but it does exist. The key is to not become discouraged. Because it will come when the time is right. And by waiting for that opportunity that’s always just out of reach to materialize, it may just be even better than you could have imagined.
