The Great Outdoors

The wonders of the The Great Outdoors are somewhat buried among John Candy’s and Dan Aykroyd’s bumbling antics in their cult-classic movie. The family fights against nature as the raccoons and bats terrorize them. Hiking turns into a disaster. And water skiing? Well, that was an adventure all on its own.

There really is nothing like the great outdoors and what it can do for your mind, body, and spirit. You can get outside and enjoy nature really anywhere. It won’t all be the same, but everyone does have access to it in some form or fashion. Whether you go to the ocean, a lake, or a river; you go to the mountains; or even a park or a golf course, there is always something for everyone.

The Mind

Being outdoors – hopefully doing something you enjoy – gives your mind a chance to relax, rest, and reflect. You can spend your time clearing your head of worries and stressors or you can use the time to reflect on a worry or stressors from a different vantage point and environment. The change of scenery can give you a different perspective, allowing you to find solutions you may not have otherwise. And as you find solutions – or even just relax – your overall state of mind will improve.

The Body

Chances are, if you are outside enjoying the great outdoors, you are doing something active. If you are at the ocean, a lake, or a rive, maybe you are swimming, or fishing, or maybe even walking the shoreline. The mountains offer the opportunity for hiking, rock climbing, and skiing during the winter months. And parks and golf courses present the opportunity for beautiful walks. Remember, easy exercise is all around us!

In addition to exercise, when you are outside, your body absorbs Vitamin D from the sun. Among other things, Vitamin D

  • Strengthens the immune system
  • Boosts your mood
  • Can lower the risk of rheumatoid arthritis
  • Can help lower blood pressure

The Spirit

When your mind and body are in a good place and are in good shape, your spirit brightens. When you feel good and your mind is lighter, you feel you can accomplish anything you set your mind to. Your spirit is unstoppable and free. And this feeling and freedom is what will enable you to tackle whatever challenges you face.

So yes. Laugh at the antics of John Candy and Dan Aykroyd. But know that time spent in the great outdoors is not the hectic mayhem they make it out to be. It nourishes us, frees us, and provides the peace of mind to take on the world.
