Those Blah Days Lacking in Color and Life

Those Blah Days

There will be those days. Those days when you just feel blah. When everything seems muted, lacking in the excitement or joy that usually comes from doing those things you love to do. Tired. Ho-hum. Life is merely an act of treading water. Those days that seem bleak, depressing.

Those blah days are a part of life. Of any and every life. Yes, they suck. They can leave you with feelings of emptiness, lack of direction, and lack of purpose. You might not realize it or have conveniently forgotten, but you had those blah days when you were working, too.

But why do we have them? We’re not working so the stress that can often lead to those blah days should be gone. We’re supposedly doing the thing we love. But they still come around. We’ve realized our true purpose and found other purposes to fulfill our lives, and yet they still come.

Some of it may come from how you fill your day. In your effort to fill your day and prove to yourself that you have a purpose beyond your career, you may be filling your day with too the things that you love to do and turning them into a chore. What is on your daily to do list? Are you filling it with your hobbies? Those things you love to do? When the things you love to do become a chore, they stop being the things you love. The things you love to do should never be on your to do list. They should never be a “have to.”

How are you filling your day? Are you doing the same things every day, creating too much of a routine? Even if they are the things you love to do, doing the same things over and over, day in and day out, takes the appeal out of them. Maybe you love to read. But if you read the same genre, the same author, over and over, the joy goes out of it. Do you love to garden? Unless you have acres of gardens, there’s only so much you can do. There are only so many flowers that can be planted and weeds that can be pulled. Yes, routines are important. But over scheduling and breaking your day down to read from 1:00 – 2:00 every day followed by gardening from 2:00 – 3:00 can turn that routine into a strangle hold.

And sometimes, we just have those blah days. They are part of human nature. We aren’t meant to always have the perfect day and sunshine-y emotions. Those blah days play a role in our lives as well. While we don’t need to perpetuate them and put contributing factors in place, they allow us to appreciate the other days. The sunshine-y days.

So when you do have one of those blah days, take a look at why you are. Chances are, you can move past it with a little self-examination. Or it is just one of those days you need to appreciate all the rest to their fullest.
